(영어독해연습) [이솝우화] 사자와 쥐

IT ONCE happened that a hungry Lion woke to find a Mouse just under his paw. 

굶주린 사자가 잠에서 깨었을때 발아래 쥐새끼가 한마리 있는 것을 우연히 발견하게 되었어요.

 

He caught the tiny creature, and was about to make a mouthful of him, when the little fellow looked up, and began to beg for his life.

사자는 그 작은 생물을 잡고는 한입에 먹으려고 했어요. 그때 그 작은 친구가 위로 올려다보며 살려달라고 빌기 시작했어요.

In most piteous tones the Mouse said: “Do not eat me. I meant no harm coming so near you. If you would only spare my life now, O Lion, I would be sure to repay you!”

가장 불쌍한 톤으로 쥐는 말했어요: "저를 먹지 말아요. 나쁜 의도로 당신 근처로 온게 아니에요. 이번 한번만 목숨을 살려주면, 사자님, 반드시 보답할게요."

The Lion laughed scornfully at this, but it amused him so much that he lifted his paw and let his brave little prisoner go free.

사자가 어이없어 웃었어요. 하지만 그말이 꽤 재밌어서 앞발을 들어서 그 용감한 작은 쥐를 가게 놓아주었어요.

It befell the great Lion, not long afterward, to be in as evil a case as had been the helpless Mouse. 

이후로 오래지 않아서 가여운 쥐가 그랬던 것처럼 사자에게도 안좋은 일이 닥쳤어요.

 

And it came about that his life was to be saved by the keeping of the promise he had ridiculed.

그리고 사자가 깔봤던 (쥐의) 약속 지킴으로 목숨을 구할 수 있게 되었어요.

He was caught by some hunters, who bound him with a strong rope, while they went away to find means for killing him.

사자가 사냥꾼들에게 잡혔고, 사냥꾼들이 튼튼한 로프로 사자를 묶었어요. 그리고는 사자를 죽일 도구를 가지러 나갔어요.

Hearing his loud groans, the Mouse came promptly to his rescue, and gnawed the great rope till the royal captive could set himself free.

사자의 으르렁거리는 소리를 듣고는, 쥐가 즉시 구하러 왔어요. 커다란 로프를 갉아서 사자가 풀려날 수 있게 해주었어요.

“You laughed,” the little Mouse said, “at the idea of my being able to be of service to you."

"제가 당신을 도와줄 수 있다는 저의 생각을 비웃었죠," 작은 쥐새끼가 말했어요.

 

"You little thought I should repay you. But you see it has come to pass that you are as grateful to me as I was once to you."

"제가 당신에게 보답할 거라고는 거의 생각못했을거에요. 하지만 내가 한때 당신에게 그랬던 것처럼 당신도 나에게 감사해할 날이 오잖아요."

 

"The weak have their place in the world as truly as the strong.”

"약한 자들도 강한 자들처럼 정말로 세상에 다 자기 자리(역할)가 있는 법이거든요."

befell : befall(안좋은 일이 닥치다)의 과거, happened

come to pass : 발생하다, 생기다, happen
