(영어독해연습) [이솝우화] 북과 향초 꽃병

A  DRUM once boasted to a Vase of Sweet Herbs in this way: 

북(드럼)이 한번은 향초 꽃병에게 이런식으로 자랑질을 했어요:

 

“Listen to me! My voice is loud and can be heard far off."

"내말 잘 들어라! 내 목소리는 커서 먼데서도 들려."

 

"I stir the hearts of men so that when they hear my bold roaring they march out bravely to battle.”

"나는 병사들의 마음을 움직이지, 그들이 내 굵은 소리를 들으면 전장에 용감하게 행진할 정도야."

 

The Vase spoke no words, but gave out a fine, sweet perfume, which filled the air and seemed to say: 

"꽃병은 말을 하지는 않았지만, 좋은 달콤한 향기를 내뿜었어요. 그것은 (방안) 공기를 가득채웠고 이렇게 말하는듯 했어요:"

 

“I cannot speak, and it is not well to be proud, but I am full of good things that are hidden within me, and that gladly come forth to give cheer and comfort." 

"나는 말할 수는 없고, 자랑질하는게 좋지는 않지만, 나는 내안에 숨겨진 좋은 것들이 가득하지. 그것은 기쁨과 평안을 주기 위해서 기쁘게 내뿜어져."

 

"People are drawn to me in their need, and they remember me afterward with gratitude."

"사람들은 자발적으로 나한테 끌려서 감사의 마음으로 후에도 나를 기억해."

 

"But you have nothing in you but noise, and you must be struck to make you give that out."

"하지만 너는 네안에 소음말고는 없잖아, 그리고 소리를 낼려면 두들겨 쳐맞아야 하잖아."

 

"I would not boast so much if I were you.”

"내가 너라면 그렇게 자랑질하지는 않을거야." ㅋㅋ

Sweet Herb : 향초, 향기로운 풀떼기

boast : 자랑하다, 뽐내다

stir : 움직이다

roaring : 울부짖는거, 으르렁거리는거, 소리가 울려퍼지는거
