(영어독해연습) [이솝우화] 두마리 개구리 - 변화를 싫어하면 뒈진다

ONCE there were two Frogs who were dear friends.

옛날에 친한 친구사이였던 두마리 개구리가 살고 있었어요.

One lived in a deep pond in the woods, where the trees hung over the water, and where no one came to disturb him.

하나는 숲속 깊은 연못에서 살았어요. 거기는 물위로 나무들이 드리워져있고 아무도 방해하지 않았어요.

The other lived in a small pool. 

다른 하나는 작은 웅덩이에 살았어요.

 

This was not a good place for a Frog, or any one else, to live in, for the country road passed through the pool, and all the horses and wagons had to go that way, so that it was not quiet like the pond, and the horses made the water muddy and foul.

여기는 개구리 뿐만 아니라 어느누구도 살기에 좋은 곳은 아니었어요. 왜냐하면 시골길이 웅덩이를 지나서 모든 말들과 마차들이 그 길로 가야했기 때문이었죠. 그래서 거기는 연못처럼 조용하지도 않았고, 말들이 물을 진흙탕으로 더럽게 만들었어요.

One day the Frog from the pond said to the other, “Do come and live with me; I have plenty of food and water, and nothing to disturb me; and it is so pleasant in my pond. Now here there is very little food, and not much water, and the road passes through your pool, so that you must always be afraid of passers-by.”

어느날 연못에 사는 개구리가 웅덩이 개구리에게 말했어요. "연못에 와서 나랑같이 살자; 나는 음식도 엄청 많고 물도 많아, 그리고 방해하는 놈도 없고; 연못에서 살면 졸라 좋아. 지금 여기는 음식도 별로 없고, 물도 별로 없고, 길도 웅덩이로 지나가서 넘마 매번 지난가는 놈들 있으면 쫄아야 하잖아."

“Thank you,” said the other Frog; “you are very kind, but I am quite content here. There is water enough; those who pass never trouble me; and as to food, I had a good dinner day before yesterday. I am used to this place, you know, and do not like change. But come and see me as often as you can.”

"고맙다," 웅덩이 개구리가 말했어요; "짜식 졸라 친철하네, 하지만 난 여기에 만족해. 물도 충분히 있고; 나를 괴롭히는 놈들도 없고; 그리고 음식으로 말하자면 나 엊그저께 저녁 거하게 먹었어. 난 여기에 익숙해, 너도 알다시피, 바꾸고 싶지 않아. 하지만 나보러 가끔 놀러와라."

The next time the Frog from the pond came to visit his friend, he could not find him.

다음번에 연못에 사는 개구리가 친구를 방문했을때, 웅덩이 개구리를 찾을 수 없었어요.

“Too late!” sang a Bird, who lived in a tree that overhung the pool.

"너무 늦었다!" 웅덩이에 걸쳐진 나무에 살고 있는 새가 말했어요.

“What do you mean?” said the Frog.

"뭔 소리여?" 개구리가 물었어요.

“Dead and gone!” said the Bird. “Run over by a wagon and killed, two days ago, and a big Hawk came and carried him off.”

"뒈졌어!" 새가 말했어요. "마차에 치여서 뒈졌어, 이틀전에. 그리고 매가 와서 물어갔어."

“Alas! if he had only taken my advice, he might have been well and happy now,” said the Frog, as he turned sadly towards home; “but he would have his way, and I have lost my friend.”

"아 쒸발! 그 세끼가 내말 들었으면, 지금 졸라 행복하게 지냈을건데," 연못 개구리가 집으로 돌아가면서 말했어요.

"하지만, 그 세끼는 지 갈길 갔고, 나는 친구를 잃었고."
