(영어독해연습) [이솝우화] 여자와 암탉

A  WOMAN had a Hen that laid an egg every day. The eggs were large, and sold for a good price. 

한 여자가 매일 알을 낳는 암탉을 가졌어요. 알들은 컸고, 좋은 가격에 팔렸어요.

 

The Woman often thought, as she took them to market: “How glad they all are to get my eggs! I could sell as many more just as easily.”

그 여자는 마켓에 알들을 가져갈 때마다 자주 이렇게 생각했어요: "그들 모두가 내 알들을 사게되면 얼마나 좋을까! 나는 훨씬 많이 쉽게 팔 수 있을 텐데."

It began to look a small thing to her to get but a single egg each day.

매일 한개의 알만 얻는 것은 그녀에게 너무 적은 것처럼 보이기 시작했어요. 

 

“If I were to give a double allowance of barley, the Hen might be made to lay two eggs a day instead of one,” she said.

"내가 모이를 두배를 늘려서 주게되면, 저 암탉이 하루에 2알이 낳게될 지도 몰라," ...

So she doubled the food, and the Hen grew very fat and sleek; but she stopped laying eggs.

그래서 그녀는 모이를 두배로 늘렸고, 암닭은 너무 뚱뚱하고 윤기가 흐르게 되었지만; 알 낳는걸 멈췄어요. (왜??)

get but a single egg : (but = only)

a small thing to her : not a big deal to her, 대단한 일이 아니다

the Hen might be made to lay two egges a day = the Hen lay two egges a day
