(영어독해연습) [여우 레디] 할매여우가 레디에게 겁을 줘

Reddy Fox lived with Granny Fox. You see, Reddy was one of a large family, so large that Mother Fox had hard work to feed so many hungry little mouths and so she had let Reddy go to live with old Granny Fox. 

여우 레디는 할매 여우와 살았어요. 레디는 대가족중의 하나였고, 새끼들이 너무 많아서 엄마 여우는 배고푼 어린것들을 먹여살리기위해 열심히 일해야했고, 레디를 할매 여우와 살도록 보냈버렸어요.

 

Granny Fox was the wisest, slyest, smartest fox in all the country round, and now that Reddy had grown so big, she thought it about time that he began to learn the things that every fox should know. 

할매 여우는 그 지역에서 가장 현명하고, 교활하고, 영리한 여우 였어요. 그리고, 레디가 충분히 자란 지금, 모든 여우들이 알아야하는 것들을 배우기 시작할 타임이라고 생각했어요.

 

So every day she took him hunting with her and taught him all the things that she had learned about hunting: about how to steal Farmer Brown's chickens without awakening Bowser the Hound, and all about the thousand and one ways of fooling a dog which she had learned.

그래서 매일 그를 사냥하는데 데려가서 그녀가 사냥에 관해 배웠던 모든것들을 그에게 가르쳐줬어요: 브라우저 개를 깨우지않고 브라운 농부네 닭을 훔치는 방법과 그녀가 배운 개를 따돌리는 무수한 방법들에 대해.

This morning Granny Fox had taken Reddy across the Green Meadows, up through the Green Forest, and over to the railroad track. 

오늘 아침 할매 여우가 그린매도우(초록풀밭)를 가로질러, 그린 숲을 통과해서, 기차길로 레디를 데려갔어요.

 

Reddy had never been there before and he didn't know just what to make of it. Granny trotted ahead until they came to a long bridge. Then she stopped.

레디는 전에 거기에 가본 적이 없었고 뭘 해야할지 몰랐어요. 긴다리에 다다를 때까지 할매는 빨리 걸었어요. 그리고나서 멈췄어요.

“Come here, Reddy, and look down,” she commanded.

"레디야, 어서와서 아래를 내려다 봐" 라고 할매가 말했어요.

Reddy did as he was told, but a glance down made him giddy, so giddy that he nearly fell. Granny Fox grinned.
“Come across,” said she, and ran lightly across to the other side.

레디는 들은데로 했어요. 하지만 내려다보는 것은 그를 어지럽게 만들었고, 너무 어지러워서 거의 떨어질 뻔 했어요. 할매 여우가 빙그레 웃었어요. "건너와,"라고 말하면서 반대편으로 가볍게 달려갔어요.

But Reddy Fox was afraid. Yes, Sir, he was afraid to take one step on the long bridge. He was afraid that he would fall through into the water or onto the cruel rocks below. Granny Fox ran back to where Reddy sat.

레디 폭스는 겁먹었어요. 정말, 긴다리에 한발자국 내딨는 것이 두려웠어요. 물속으로 떨어지거나 살벌한 아래 바위로 떨어질 까 두려웠어요. 할매 여우는 레디가 앉아있는 자리로 돌아왔어요.

“For shame, Reddy Fox!” said she. “What are you afraid of? Just don't look down and you will be safe enough. Now come along over with me.”

"창피하다, 레디야". "뭐가 두려운 거니? 아래를 보지마 그러면 충분히 안전할 거야. 이제 나를 따라와라."

But Reddy Fox hung back and begged to go home and whimpered. Suddenly Granny Fox sprang to her feet, as if in great fright. 

하지만 레디는 움직이지 않으려고 했고 집으로 가자고 조르면서 울었어요. 갑자기 할매여우가 벌떡 일어났어요. 마치 놀란 것처럼.

 

“Bowser the Hound! Come, Reddy, come!” she cried, and started across the bridge as fast as she could go.

"브라우저 개세끼다! 레디야 이리와!" 소리쳤어요. 그리고 다리를 빠르게 건너기 시작했어요.

Reddy didn't stop to look or to think. His one idea was to get away from Bowser the Hound. 

레디는 쳐다보거나 생각하기 위해 멈추지 않았어요. 유일한 생각은 브라우저 개세끼로부터 벗어나는 것이었어요.

 

“Wait, Granny! Wait!” he cried, and started after her as fast as he could run. He was in the middle of the bridge before he remembered it at all. 

"기다려, 할매! 기다려!" 소리쳤어요. 그리고 최대한 빠르게 그녀를 쫒아가기 시작했어요. 그가 뭔가 기억해내기도 전에 다리 중간에 와있었어요.

 

When he was at last safely across, it was to find old Granny Fox sitting down laughing at him. 

마침내 안전하게 건넜을때, 할매가 그를 보며 웃고 앉아있는 것이었어요.

 

Then for the first time Reddy looked behind him to see where Bowser the Hound might be. 

그때 처음으로 뒤를 돌아봤어요. 브라우저 개가 있을 위치를 보기위해.

 

He was nowhere to be seen. Could he have fallen off the bridge? “Where is Bowser the Hound?” cried Reddy. 

그가 아무데도 보이지 않았어요. 다리에서 떨어졌을까? "브라우저 새끼 어디있지?" 레디가 소리쳤어요.

“Home in Farmer Brown's dooryard,” replied Granny Fox dryly. Reddy stared at her for a minute. 

"브라운 농부네 현관앞마당에 있는 개집" 할매가 냉담하게 대답했어요. 한동안 할매를 쳐다봤어요. (거짓말쟁이~)

 

Then he began to understand that Granny Fox had simply scared him into running across the bridge. 

그때 할매가 단지 겁줘서 다리를 건너게 할려고 했다는 것을 이해하기 시작했어요.

 

Reddy felt very cheap, very cheap indeed. “Now we'll run back again,” said Granny Fox. And this time Reddy did.

레디는 정말로 매우 기분이 나빴어요.(창피했어요). "이제 되돌아갈거야" 할매가 말했어요. 이번엔 레디가 달렸어요.

dryly : 냉담하게, dully, not emotionally

cheap : unpleasant, shameful
